Learning to eat low residue is not so hard. But not getting bored or keeping that kind of food on hand is another story. Today I made white bread. It actually turned out pretty good.

Heavens To Merkatroid, Restaurants Are Out

Well today was my first restaurant meal since I started the low residue diet. I thought I made a good choice. I obviously did not. Oh my what a long afternoon and evening I have had. I went to lunch with my hubby to a Chinese restaurant we have been to many times. I knew I was not going to be able to have my regular fare that I usually have. Like chow mein or kung pow so I chose sweet and sour chicken (made sure I did not eat any pineapple) and white rice. Well about 2 or 3 hours later I knew it was a big mistake. I am not sure if it was the sauce or the breading on chicken but I will not be trying to eat any other food but food I have prepared, for quite a while. The cost is way too high.

Breakfast
  • coffee and creamer

I knew I was going out to lunch so I did not eat food which sometimes triggers bm's.

Lunch

  • Sweet and sour chicken
  • White rice

Fiber-3.0grams Calories-752 Fat-8.94grams (I had to estimate and am high in amts. if anything)

And that's it. I have been drinking water ever since and do not plan to eat anything until tomorrow. Well lesson learned. I am not ready to eat out.

Can't stop eating sweets

Well, as I posted on other blog site, my sweet tooth continues. Here is yesterdays list.

Breakfast
  • Life cereal
  • Milk
  • coffee and creamer
  • coffee and cream

Lunch

  • Tuna Sandwich
  • Homemade juice
  • Lemon cake

Snack

  • Banana bread

Dinner

  • 3oz chicken breast
  • stuffing
  • wine
  • lemon cake

Fiber-6.1 grams Calories-1455 Fat-27.55 grams

Health-I felt good all day. Had BM around 8:30 for about an hour or so. But woke up in middle of night feeling bloated. Probably either the wine (which is not on my diet) or too much sweets. I will forgo the wine but the sweets might be a challenge.

Back To Measuring Food

When it comes to dieting, I have been on one for a lot of my adult life. I have easily lost weight eating healthy high-fiber foods like fruits and veggies and whole grains. They are filling and keep the calories down. In other words, you bulk up to bulk down.

I don't need to lose weight now but I do need to keep the weight off. This will be a challenge. I have the added challenge of not being able to eat any of the food that are bulky. I also, and this is most important, need to keep fiber under 8 to 10 grams a day. So over eating calories is very easy. I have a new problem, since this past year my tastes have changed. I have never been a sweet eater. But now I crave sweets. Baked goods, chocolate, sugar, sugar, sugar. It doesn't help that I love to bake.

So here I am measuring my foods carefully. I have been doing well keeping my fiber grams down. But not my calories. Because I am not overly active yet, (although improving everyday), my goal is to keep calories somewhere between 1400-1600. I am not very tall, a little over 5'1" and my goal is to stay between 120-125lbs. So wish me luck keeping this weight off. I try only to weigh myself once a week. I don't want to obsess and lets face it, some days I probably retain 3 lbs of water, so for now, Mondays are weigh in days.

Measuring my breakfast, 3/4 C. Life cereal and 1/2 c. nonfat milk is about 2 grams of fiber. That's about a quarter of the amt. I can have all day. See my dilemma.

I didn't have the sundae till afterwards so couldn't be the cause. The sundae is probably the cause of being bloated this morning though.

Update to Today

This isn't my first time being on a low residue diet. When I had my ileostomy, I had to be careful not to eat certain foods. But this is my first time I am needing to be very serious about what I put in my mouth. This last hospital stay really gave me a scare. So to catch up so I have a full account of this journey, I will do an overview of the last 6 days. I am doing it mainly from memory so it really is just a general overview.

Sunday April 11-I ate breakfast at the hospital. This was my first solid food for 4 days. They let me out of the hospital after they knew my breakfast went through the narrow part of my intestines. Takes 1 to 2 hrs for this to happen. I got home around 2:00.

  • Breakfast-Pancakes, coffee, crandberry juice
  • Early dinner-Pasta, and ? (? means I don't remember)

Monday-

  • Breakfast-coffee and creamer
  • Lunch-Frosted flakes, milk
  • Dinner-Bacon, eggs, toast, Juice, Potatos
  • Snack-Earthquake, Potato bread, and butter

Fiber-5g. My Weight 121lb Health-feel good and bm's good

Tuesday-

  • Breakfast-coffee and creamer
  • Lunch-Bacon sandwich
  • Dinner-Beef and Cheese Tortilla, Wine
  • Snack-Brownie

Fiber-4.9g Health-feel good,BM's good

Wednesday-

  • Breakfast-Honey bunches of oats, milk
  • Lunch-Egg salad sandwich, chips, Brownie
  • Dinner-Scallops, Green beans, New potato

Fiber-7.5g Health-Not feeling as well. Diarrhea. E-mailed Doctor for more Directions

Thursday-??

Still not feeling well. The Doctor e-mailed me back and said he wanted me on the strictest form of Low residue diet, which means limiting dairy, no alcohol, and only juices for fruits and vegetables except for bananas. He did say I could have coffee:)

Friday-

  • Breakfast-Coffee, Creamer, apple juice, banana bread
  • Lunch-Mac and Cheese, chicken breast, crandberry juice
  • Dinner-Hamburger, bun, chips, banana bread

Fiber-5.6g Health-felt a bit constipated. It was 2 days since BM but apple juice took care of it and I hope to feel better tomorrow.

Now I can start fresh with daily postings.

History of my Illness

I will give a very brief rundown of how I got here on this journey.

A little over one year ago I was diagnosed with colon/rectal cancer. My tumor was large and located mainly in the rectum. I had a colostomy bag put in, 5 weeks radiation and chemo, My Big surgery where they removed my tumor, along with all my rectum, part of my colon and removed my colostomy and added an ileostomy. I then had 4 months of chemo, and another surgery to take out my ileostomy. This all took about a year.

Well about a week ago I was hospitalized with an obstruction. They almost had to do surgery which they really don't want to do because I already have enough scar tissue. What they have found is that I have a large area in my small intestines that is very damaged and narrow probably from the radiation. This means instead of being on a high fiber diet, which would be good for my cancer, I now have to be on a low residue diet. My doctor would prefer me to be on the strictest form of this diet and then maybe add a few foods back later, if I can tolerate it.

So this is my journey.......................
