Doing a bit better

I forgot to weigh in this morning.  I will do it first thing in the morning.  I am finally getting my eating a bit under control.  Not eating low cal. or low fat, but am not eating mountain size servings anymore.  Need to grocery shop this morning and am planing to stay away from as much processed junk as possible.

In Denial

Haven't posted all month on this blog.  My weight has only gone up.  Feeling unconfortable at this new weight.  Need to get committed to this blog and be totally honest.  My weight is now 136lbs.

September 8,2010

Went out to lunch with Mom and Kris.  Had Chinese and really did a number on my "digestion".  When will I learn.  I need to get more disciplined and think of my diet like any other prescription medicine.  There are certain foods and certain times of day I just can't eat.  If I followed what my body needs, I would maintain a good weight and not have hours of misery.

Weekend Away Will Do It Everytime

Went away for Labor Day weekend.  I think I did well last week with my eating until the weekend.  Actually, I did well while gone except for this stupid can of Honey Roasted Peanuts.  I ate the whole thing.  I know I can't resist them, so why did I buy them.

So I weight myself yesterday, and I went up a pound.  Not a success but not a tragedy.
These few pounds I need to lose might take longer than I thought, but at least I am not gaining at the rate I was a few weeks ago:)

August 31, 2010

I am still trying to figure out this new site I am calculating my food and exercise.  Not sure if I will like this site better than my old one but will give it a few more days to understand how it works.

Breakfast- 2 large servings of juice
Lunch-2 large servings of juice
Dinner-Salmon burger, 1 slice sour dough bread, mayo, green salad, dressing, 3 oatmeal cookies

Water-6 glasses

Exercise-walk moderately-45 min.  Ride bike-15 min

Well let's try this again

I had a bad day with eating and then my day got even worse because of my "digestion".  I ate three meals and definitely ate too huge of portions.
When I eat three meals, my bathroom issues take over my day and I do little else but run to the bathroom.  So today I am going to keep better track and also just very small snacks and one meal.  Hopefully I will do and feel better today.

Monday, August 30, 2010

Here I go again.

Today I start keeping track of my eating and exercise.  Had I started this days ago, I might be ahead.  As it is, I ate way too much this weekend and my weight is up even more.  I did exercise and so there is progress there.  Well, I guess I should tell you I weigh 131 lbs.  A few days ago I was 1 1/2 lbs lighter but this is my life and I am a real and flawed woman.  So here I go.  I am trying a different online site to keep track of my food and exercise.

New Name New Diet

Since my last surgery, I can eat anything I want.  So I have renamed this blog and am focusing on keeping my weight down.  I also need to figure out the amount and timing I eat.  If I eat too often or too much, I find I am in bathroom the whole day.  I my eating habits may look unhealthy but may be a neccessity.  So here it goes.

Another blockage

I had one blockage last week. Much worse then the two previous ones. And today I have another obstruction.

For breakfast I ate a lemon square and one egg cheese omelet. I guess all it took was that lemon square because less then an hour later the cramping started. Very painful. I stopped eating or drinking until just a few minutes ago I had a jello. So I guess it's mashed potatos for dinner tonight.

I go to Portland to have a test done on Friday. It will take most the day. I did call Dr. L and he wants me in the emergency room if I start vomiting, or don't pass gas or have a BM within the next 24 hours. Otherwise I go in on friday for the test as planned.

I can not believe how frustrating this is.

Thursday and Friday's eating

I didn't post Thursdays menu because I ate 3 questionable foods that caused D. So I will just post the three items. I don't know which was the problem or it could of been the combo. Alfredo sauce from Mac's. Gin and tonic. or Ice cream. All are low fiber but not low residue. Up all night with D.

Steamed clams

I went out to a local restaurant for my sister's birthday today. Creekside Grill. I was a little nervous because I did not want to make a mistake. I was relieved when I saw steamed clams on the menu. It is something that has not bothered me so far. And I enjoy it. My fat grams were way over the top today. Ch. Chip cookies are something I need to not make as often. Definitely ate more today than I have been today. Hopefully I will still sleep ok.

Soluable and insoluable fiber

This morning, starting at 8:45am I started having bathroom issues. Didn't last long. Most of what I ate yesterday I thought was safe. But I am thinking the Mozzarella might be the culprit. I hope not. I love cheese and did not eat much of it yesterday but I might be totally cutting out dairy.

I have been reading a lot about soluable vs insoluable fiber. I need to wait another day or two for my body to totally heal, then I am going to experiment adding a little more soluable fiber into my diet. I need my body to be healed first so I have a good baseline.

Improvement!

This morning, I woke up feeling that my intestines are on the upswing in healing. When I eat too much fiber or meat or residue, if it is starting to block, I get bad cramping. I might also vomit. 3 nights ago I started doing both. The vomiting stopped. Slowly, over a day or so the cramping stopped. But then I am left with the bloating, swelling of the abdomen, intestines and stomach. It also is tender to touch. I have not wanted any pressure from pants, even some of my jammies to be against my middle.

This morning, I woke up knowing I had improved a lot. I am still swollen in my upper small intestines, but I don't feel like someone took a Brillo pad and scrubbed the inside of my bowels. Yes, that's how it felt. The secret to avoiding doing this is to first make good choices, keep track throughout the day on fiber grams, and then post here on my day so if I have an issue, I can go back and see what the problem may be. Why do I get lazy and stop this process until I have problems? I don't know. But I need to be consistent. Today, I plan on eating more. My calories have been too low because I wanted to give my bowels a bit of a break. I probably could use one more day of very low eating but I am hungry and might start making bad choices if I don't eat more soon.

I weighed myself this morning. I guess the tightness of my pants is only because of swelling. I weighed 124.5. I am conflicted about what weight would be the healthiest for me. I know I can't be any bigger because I gain it in my abdomen region. Which is not good for cancer detection. And I am pretty sure if I lose 10 or 15 more pounds, most of it would come off my middle because that's the only place I still have fat. But to maintain 110 to 115 lbs would be much harder and the foods I eat are not low fat, diety type of foods. I guess I will just stick with trying to keep my calories between 1400-1600 and if with more activity, I lose a few more pounds, great! If not, it wasn't meant to be.

Spitting Nails

I am so angry at myself. I have no business just winging it with my diet. The stakes are too high.

Not only have I not been keeping track of fiber grams, but I also have introduced many foods to my diet at the same time. Without even documenting. So today, I am about 36 hours from my last bm, I had bad cramping last night. and I vomited 3 times. All signs that I possibly have a blockage. I can't even say what food has caused it because in yesterday, I had 3 new foods. Stupid, stupid, stupid. So today, I am going to my sisters to celebrate her birthday. Then we are all going to lunch. I will be lucky if I make it to my sis's. Let alone go to lunch.

I will not eat breakfast this morning, just coffee. If I do make it to lunch, I need to be very careful what I eat. If I am still cramping, I will skip lunch also.

I have said it before, I need to be meticulous on documenting what goes in my body. But I have ignored this. I have had too many scares this month. I am being reckless with my life. Stupid stupid stupid.

Oh no, maybe blockage

So far today I woke up and felt a bit bloated. Ate toast with margarine and very little seedless marion berry Jam. By about 8:30 cramping started. Digestion-No pains, two BM sessions, normal form but still burning like acidic. Need more water.

Sunday May 2, 2010 Too many carbs

I need to make changes but here was what I ate.

Breakfast
  • Honey bunches of oats cereal

  • glazed donut

Late lunch-early dinner

  • Pasta alfredo
  • garlic bread
  • chocolate chip cookies
  • juice

Fiber-8.4 grams Calories-1826 fat-79

Mondays weight- 124.5

Health-I obviously am eating too much carbs and fat. I started having issues Saturday night with going a lot and being very acidic. Bottom burning a lot. The next day I went a little throughout the day and by around 6:00 I was going a lot. Not diarrhea but acidic. I think several things are going on here. I am eating too many carbs at one time, like pasta and garlic bread, cereal and a donut. I ate a double portion of the pasta, the sauce, the donut, the garlic bread all high in fat. I am eating more dairy than I should and I am not drinking enough water. So the plan this week is as follows:

Eat only one new or complex ingredient food in a day, IE. alfredo sauce, eat pure one ingredient foods for the most part. Eat small 1 serving size portion. 1 cup pasta instead of two. Eat one carb. per meal. Eat at least 1 egg or fish per day. less cheese, and drink more water. List every bite on my food calculator.

Well that's it. I hope to be having more manageable BM's in a couple days.

What Can I Eat?

Well I did create this blog so I could document my diet and health closer and not have so much of it on my other blog. Well this post is going to be a whinny one. But since no one really reads this, I feel free to unload.

The last couple days I didn't document what I ate because I felt I was getting pretty good at keeping with in the low residue guidelines. Well I shouldn't have been so sure of myself. I am still finding foods that I can not eat.

Yesterday I went fishing and didn't get back until almost 6:00. Didn't want to fry fish by the time we would get them cleaned so I put bacon in the oven and let it cook while we cleaned our fish and put them in the freezer. So at around 6:30 I ate a bacon sandwich with one leaf of lettuce. I am not sure if it was the one leaf of lettuce or the 2 strips of bacon or probably both. But around 1:30 this morning the now familiar pain and cramping in the location of my damaged intestine started up. Meaning it was partially blocked. If it was not blocked, it would have passed the area and been in my colon hours ago. See the kind of detective I am becoming. Anyway, panic set in so I got up hoping the food would dislodge and pass through. Although my abdomen is sore this morning, I think I got lucky and avoided a trip to the hospital. I think. Didn't sleep much after that.

So now I am crossing lettuce, even a small amount off my list and also bacon. So what can I eat? Well so far fish doesn't seem to be a problem. White rice, white bread, low fiber cereal, white pasta, eggs (thank God for my chickens), baked goods made with white flour and without nuts and fruit. A little dairy. Juices without pulp. Except prune juice. Thinking..........Thinking.............Yep that's about it. It may sound like a lot to someone else but there is not many dishes I like that doesn't have meat and vegetables in it. Oh I forgot potatoes without the skin. I can have that:)

So today I am back keeping track of exactly what and how much I eat. I do not what to have my belly cut wide open and have my intestines removed, only to cause more scarring and possibly more problems and perhaps an ostomy. So this diet is very serious for me. No one in my real life really wants to know the details of my diet, weight and in general health. Besides my hubby, what every one else really wants to know is that my cancer has not returned and that's about it. Who could blame them. So this little blog that no one reads gets to hear it all. Aren't you so lucky:)

Going to try making a Quiche with homemade pie dough, eggs, milk and a little cheese. I hope I can digest that.

Heavens To Merkatroid, Restaurants Are Out

Well today was my first restaurant meal since I started the low residue diet. I thought I made a good choice. I obviously did not. Oh my what a long afternoon and evening I have had. I went to lunch with my hubby to a Chinese restaurant we have been to many times. I knew I was not going to be able to have my regular fare that I usually have. Like chow mein or kung pow so I chose sweet and sour chicken (made sure I did not eat any pineapple) and white rice. Well about 2 or 3 hours later I knew it was a big mistake. I am not sure if it was the sauce or the breading on chicken but I will not be trying to eat any other food but food I have prepared, for quite a while. The cost is way too high.

Breakfast
  • coffee and creamer

I knew I was going out to lunch so I did not eat food which sometimes triggers bm's.

Lunch

  • Sweet and sour chicken
  • White rice

Fiber-3.0grams Calories-752 Fat-8.94grams (I had to estimate and am high in amts. if anything)

And that's it. I have been drinking water ever since and do not plan to eat anything until tomorrow. Well lesson learned. I am not ready to eat out.

Can't stop eating sweets

Well, as I posted on other blog site, my sweet tooth continues. Here is yesterdays list.

Breakfast
  • Life cereal
  • Milk
  • coffee and creamer
  • coffee and cream

Lunch

  • Tuna Sandwich
  • Homemade juice
  • Lemon cake

Snack

Dinner

  • lemon cake

Health-I felt good all day. Had BM around 8:30 for about an hour or so. But woke up in middle of night feeling bloated. Probably either the wine (which is not on my diet) or too much sweets. I will forgo the wine but the sweets might be a challenge.

Back To Measuring Food

When it comes to dieting, I have been on one for a lot of my adult life. I have easily lost weight eating healthy high-fiber foods like fruits and veggies and whole grains. They are filling and keep the calories down. In other words, you bulk up to bulk down.

I don't need to lose weight now but I do need to keep the weight off. This will be a challenge. I have the added challenge of not being able to eat any of the food that are bulky. I also, and this is most important, need to keep fiber under 8 to 10 grams a day. So over eating calories is very easy. I have a new problem, since this past year my tastes have changed. I have never been a sweet eater. But now I crave sweets. Baked goods, chocolate, sugar, sugar, sugar. It doesn't help that I love to bake.

So here I am measuring my foods carefully. I have been doing well keeping my fiber grams down. But not my calories. Because I am not overly active yet, (although improving everyday), my goal is to keep calories somewhere between 1400-1600. I am not very tall, a little over 5'1" and my goal is to stay between 120-125lbs. So wish me luck keeping this weight off. I try only to weigh myself once a week. I don't want to obsess and lets face it, some days I probably retain 3 lbs of water, so for now, Mondays are weigh in days.

Measuring my breakfast, 3/4 C. Life cereal and 1/2 c. nonfat milk is about 2 grams of fiber. That's about a quarter of the amt. I can have all day. See my dilemma.

Update to Today

This isn't my first time being on a low residue diet. When I had my ileostomy, I had to be careful not to eat certain foods. But this is my first time I am needing to be very serious about what I put in my mouth. This last hospital stay really gave me a scare. So to catch up so I have a full account of this journey, I will do an overview of the last 6 days. I am doing it mainly from memory so it really is just a general overview.

Sunday April 11-I ate breakfast at the hospital. This was my first solid food for 4 days. They let me out of the hospital after they knew my breakfast went through the narrow part of my intestines. Takes 1 to 2 hrs for this to happen. I got home around 2:00.

  • Breakfast-Pancakes, coffee, crandberry juice

History of my Illness

I will give a very brief rundown of how I got here on this journey.

A little over one year ago I was diagnosed with colon/rectal cancer. My tumor was large and located mainly in the rectum. I had a colostomy bag put in, 5 weeks radiation and chemo, My Big surgery where they removed my tumor, along with all my rectum, part of my colon and removed my colostomy and added an ileostomy. I then had 4 months of chemo, and another surgery to take out my ileostomy. This all took about a year.

Well about a week ago I was hospitalized with an obstruction. They almost had to do surgery which they really don't want to do because I already have enough scar tissue. What they have found is that I have a large area in my small intestines that is very damaged and narrow probably from the radiation. This means instead of being on a high fiber diet, which would be good for my cancer, I now have to be on a low residue diet. My doctor would prefer me to be on the strictest form of this diet and then maybe add a few foods back later, if I can tolerate it.

So this is my journey.......................
